Hen Party vs. Bachelorette: What’s the Real Difference?

The difference between a hen party and a bachelorette is simpler than you think. Spoiler: it’s mostly geography, a little bit of vibe, and a whole lot of celebrating the bride.

Real talk: If you’re currently in the middle of planning a pre-wedding bash, you’ve probably spent way too much time scrolling through Pinterest, only to get totally confused. Is it a Hen Party? Is it a Bachelorette? Are we calling it a "Stagette"?

And since we’re officially celebrating our US bachelorette launch today, it felt like the perfect time to clear up the confusion.

If you feel like you’re speaking two different languages, don't worry: you’re not alone. Let's break it down, bestie-to-bestie.

It’s All About Geography

Honestly? The difference is almost entirely about where you are on the map.

If you’re in the US or Canada, you’re throwing a Bachelorette Party. It’s the term everyone knows. It’s on all the cute bachelorette merchandise, and it’s what you say when you’re grabbing an Uber to the airport for that weekend in Nashville or Scottsdale.

If you hop across the pond to the UK, Ireland, or Australia, suddenly you’re planning a Hen Party (or a "Hen Do").

That’s it. That’s the big secret. They are essentially the same event: a send-off for the bride-to-be, usually featuring her favorite people, maybe some embarrassing stories, and definitely too much champagne.

Is There a Vibe Difference?

While they are technically the same thing, the culture around them can feel a little different depending on where you are.

The Bachelorette Vibe (US-Style): When we think bachelorette here, we usually think themes. Matching swimsuits, custom sashes, "Bride Tribe" fanny packs, and itineraries that are scheduled down to the minute. It is often very "Instagrammable," organized, and focused on a big, high-energy weekend trip. You will likely see groups roaming hotspots like Nashville or Miami in matching denim jackets or white boots, focused on capturing that perfect grid post. It is all about the aesthetic, complete with a jam-packed itinerary that keeps everyone on track from morning mimosas to late-night clubbing.

The Hen Do Vibe (UK/Global-Style): Hen Dos can sometimes feel a bit more like a holiday or an extended getaway. It is not uncommon for a Hen Party to head to places like Ibiza, Marbella, or a cute countryside cottage for a few days of fun. For a long time, the classic approach was "fancy dress" (costumes), where the bride would wear a veil or funny hat and the group might wear matching t-shirts. Recently, though, there has been a massive shift. Thanks to social media, Hen Dos are evolving into hyper-curated, Pinterest-perfect events with full-on, cohesive themes like "Disco Cowgirl" or "Bridgerton Tea Party." Beyond the style, a big difference here is the guest list. Hen Dos often span generations, meaning you might find the bride, her besties, her mom, her aunts, and her future mother-in-law all together for a cheeky weekend. They also tend to lean into games, pranks, and scavenger hunts where the bride has to complete dares in public.

Does it Actually Matter?

Here is the truth: It absolutely does not matter what you call it.

Whether you’re throwing a "Bachelorette," a "Hen Do," or just calling it "Sarah’s Last Hurrah," the goal is exactly the same:

  • Celebrate the bride.
  • Get the girls (and anyone else invited) together.
  • Make memories that you’ll be laughing about at the wedding reception.

Don’t stress about the terminology. If you call it a Bachelorette in London, people will know what you mean. If you call it a Hen Party in New York, you’ll just sound like you’ve watched too many British rom-coms. Either way, you’re going to have an amazing time.

So, pick the name that feels right for you, grab the cute decor, and focus on planning a weekend that the bride is actually going to love.

Now, go get back to the fun part: planning the itinerary!
