So your bestie has asked you to stand beside her on the biggest and most important day of her life. She has found her man, but the day won’t be possible without a little help from her gals and that’s where you come in. Wedding planning can be a stressful task at the best of times (this I know first hand from my wedding planning gigs and from being bridesmaid). Tensions will most likely run quite high now and again, so I have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you on your way to becoming bridesmaid of the year, or even ever. Get ready to slay girl.
1. Keep Calm and Plan a Wedding
It’s no secret that things can get a little tense at times when it comes to wedding planning and the Bride will most likely have moments of being completely overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done. It’s your job as her lady in waiting to defuse any tensions and be her voice of reason. Assure her that everything will get done and offer to take on some of the task load where possible.
2. Say Yes to the Dress
The dress is one of the most important parts of the planning for a lot of Brides. Take the time to organise a lovely day out for her and the rest of the Bridal party – if you’re surprising her with this day out, don’t forget to include MOB (Mother of the Bride)! Start the day off with a list of some of the nicest Bridal boutiques around and make a fuss of her as she tries on different styles. With the task at hand out of the way, plan a special lunch or dinner out for the group with a few drinks to celebrate afterwards. Prosecco or gin are always a good way to finish.
3. Playing Dress Up
She has her heart set on a particular style of bridesmaid dress and you know it’s going to look awful on you. Don’t throw a hissy fit!! Be constructive in telling her that you really don’t think that particular style will suit your shape, or that colour usually washes you out, but where at all possible, offer to at least try the dress on. If she still insists you look stunning in the neon orange sequin bridesmaid “gown”, then plaster on your best Chesire grin and get on with it. It is her day after all.
4. The Last Hoorah
Plan an absolutely fabulous Hen Party! It probably goes without saying that this is our favourite part of the Bridesmaids duty list!! Make note of all your girl’s favourite things and throw her the most fabulously glamorous Hen bash of the year. A scrapbook with pictures and messages from her nearest and dearest is a must. If activities and fancy dress are what your girl wants, then that’s what she shall have. If she prefers something more low key then maybe plan a spa day and afternoon tea for chats with her best gal pals. Throw in a few hen party games personalised to the happy couple and, where budget allows, a hen party survival kit for each girl to help get through the dreaded next day. Last but defo not least, get some cute Hen bash accessories from our fab shop to glam your girl up good and proper. You’re good to go.
5. Timing is everything
If your girl has picked a whole clan of Bridesmaids to have around her on the big day, then great, because many hands make light work right? Well yes, but be warned, this can often mean a bit more madness on the morning of the wedding with 4 or 5 ladies needing hair and make-up preps. Hello, Wedding Morning timeline. Devise a plan of time slots for the Bride and each Bridesmaid to have her hair and make-up looked after on the morning. This way everyone knows where they are meant to be and the Bride won’t have to keep her Groom peppering at the altar for too long – it’s a Bride’s prerogative to be at least a little late on the day!
6. A few of her favourite things
You may have seen my recent post on lovely gift ideas to spoil the Bride with on her big day. These simple touches don’t have to cost an arm and a leg but certainly help you out in keeping the Bride’s smile shining. She will really appreciate the extra thought and effort you have gone to and while this tip certainly isn’t a must on the long list of Bridesmaid duties, it will go a long way to getting you one step closer to that Bridesmaid of the Year title!
7. Fashion Police
Hair – check. Makeup – check. Dress – check. Obligatory glass champers to calm the nerves – CHECK!! The blushing Bride is all set. She looks an absolute vision, there is not doubt about it. Your job?? Make sure she stays an absolute vision. You are on beauty and fashion faux pas alert all day. If she needs lippy, you have lippy. If she needs a sewing kit, no problem because you have a needle and thread in your bag of tricks!! (The emergency kit listed in the gift ideas will come in more handy than you think trust me!!) If she needs the train of her dress tied up to the back of her dress because the invisible button has failed but she can’t dance if the train is down then you will follow her around and re-tie that train every half hour if needs be – true story!
8. Get the party started
We all know that getting out on the dance floor can sometimes be the last thing on the wedding guests mind after a 3 course meal and a second helping from Uncle Tom’s leftover dessert but there is nothing worse than a band playing to an empty dance floor. That’s where you come in. Make sure the bridal party gets the party started for at least the first few songs to get the mood going in the room. Guests will follow suit shortly after and the party will be in full swing.
So there you have it. It may seem like you are signing your life over to your bestie for 10 – 12 months of wedding madness but don’t forget that she chose you for a reason. She trusts you above all to help her plan the day she has probably dreamt of since she was knee high to a grasshopper. Take it as an honour and a compliment and enjoy it with her!
